Setbacks
These are the moments when something unexpected goes wrong. There’s a disturbance and dysfunction that results from a limitation that popped up. Then, how to assess and perceive how to proceed. First is to consider are you safe. There, is there pain or discomfort that creates a delay in what you intended to do? Take the moment to pause, slow it down and pay closer attention without judgment to enable a more direct way of listening as this is your cellular awakening. Best when confronted with this event, consider what to do, what actions are necessary to aid you in returning to what would feel more optimal? Once that is assessed through comparisons, then consider how far from the optimal have you moved away from? At this moment, it’s best to look at the relationship to all the parts, people and events. Is there one area to focus on more specifically or better to consider the relationship between parts? Your body, biology and neurology, each attempting to communicate with all of you are getting your attention so best to listen and find that any correction comes from a more global, integrative way of paying attention. Create a rapport within and with others to communicate and attend to the conditions that arose.
In The Feldenkrais Method® of somatic learning we focus on what the most optimal way of functioning, living our lives would be. How to consider what is missing and how to introduce the information in a felt sense. Pain is derived from sensory nerve fibers so Feldenkrais is a strategy in how we create distinctions in sensory acuity. Of course we want to fix a problem and learning how to attend to the concerns through other gentler pathways to resolve the events often is the more gentle and productive pathway. It’s about how to get back up and move efficiently forward again. Comparisons are essential to find a better way to rely on your skeleton compared to muscular effort that results from any disturbances and dysfunction. This is what is offered when exploring Feldenkrais, to support you in feeling more resilient and light. Your nervous system works as an integrated whole that aids and helps healing physically, mentally and emotionally.
I believe that the unity of mind and body is an objective reality. They are not just parts somehow related to each other, but an inseparable whole while functioning. — Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais
I personally learned this myself, this past week when I needed to find another pathway to pause, rest, restore and heal. There is a sense of learning better how to listen and attend to what is needed in the moment especially when the unexpected occurred. It’s all learning and hopefully we’re each continuing to learn and grow, moving forward despite the assaults, injuries and setbacks that do befall all of us.
I will be taking a brief pause this coming week so please explore all of my FREE Awareness Through Movement (ATM)® lessons on my YouTube channel. It’s a great way to continually tap into soothing and calming what ails you with strategies in how to move gently to allow pathways that contracted and shut down to gently begin to move freely again.
I will be teaching the following week of the holidays so what better way to care for yourself while caring for others during this festive time.
I hope I’ve earned the privilege of your time this week, sharing my learning as we learn together.
Warmest,
Peggi
