Tricks That Treat

Tricks That Treat

Perfection is unattainable, nonetheless we can focus on continued improvement. There is a process to do this. First you need to make a commitment to grow and evolve, seeking harmony within and around you. You don’t need to know in the beginning how – just set an intention and the rest begins to fall into place. Continually be growing, evolving, refining, redirecting, analyzing, adapting and focusing your attention on the little things. This will lead you and those around you to create improvement for yourself and others.

Take a moment and interlace your fingers and do that again and again, faster and faster. I would suspect each time you interlaced your fingers did you do it in the exact same way? Especially doing it faster and faster, that’s a hard wired pattern in your brain. Now slow it down and while the pattern is the same, interlace your fingers the non-habitual way, simply change which thumb initiates the interlacing and notice, you have to slow this process down as it’s not fast thinking, wired into your nervous system, rather you need time to pause and reflect on what’s different and begin to find your way.

Sense through touch, look to see and slowly continue to alternate the interlacing of your fingers until your non-habitual pattern starts to evolve and your tempo increases. Your efficiency in doing something while subtly different begins to wire in. You’re doing the same thing but different enough to how you organize yourself that your brain, your neurons are firing to create new distinctions that give you more potency.

You can do the same thing instead cross your ankles or knees, or alternate rotating your hands, changing the tempo of one hand while the other maintains a constant rhythm. There will be one way you do it because it’s easier or simpler. You can create other options as to how to do what you do. You can create more options and possibilities moving forward. This isn’t just about shifting how you interlace your fingers or cross your knees, ankles or arms, rather you are rewiring into your nervous system different ways to do the same thing while each is different enough that in a sense it tricks your brain into finding other ways and the treat is that as you develop this process, you increase your potency in how you organize to do anything multiple ways.

The truly important learning is to be able to do the thing you already know in another way. The more ways you have to do the things you know, the freer is your choice. And the freer your choice, the more you’re a human being. – Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais
