Learned Behavior
Learned Behavior
Humans are considered learning beings that gather from experience. This is called ontogenetic compared to instinctual learning in the animal kingdom referred to as Phylogenetic. Before a person starts to trust their gathered experiences, there’s a deeper learning that comes from listening to your inner voice. It always gives it to you straight if you’re really pausing to listen. Sometimes this inner voice can be loud and clear but more often it’s a whisper, subtler. So do you take a moment to hear what your inner being is sharing?
Nasa did a study in the 1960’s to find out what created genius and found institutional learning was removing creativity. Not trusting within, instead, being told what to do was removing learning to trust yourself. Instead of gifting creativity, academia was actually developing a pattern of uncreative behavior.
What if you began to trust in yourself, your inner voice when you listen, it’s always informing you of something deep within to attend to. Now how does this relate to exploring Awareness Through Movement (ATM)® lessons?
ATM lessons are constructed in such a way as to express what is more optimal for any human nervous system for the most efficient, organic way of being. It allows each of us to adapt and modify the instructions to their personal needs in that moment. We guide you in your process vs telling you it has to be a certain way.
The Phylogenetic world senses and feels within, when they are safe or in danger and this is exactly what enables them to survive. Listening to their internal sensations derived from the stimuli from their external environment. Many Natives also had this way of listening, until they were manipulated and that took away their freedom and innate creativity.
Your creativity is your gift not only to yourself but to others that you learn with. Every Feldenkrais practitioner has their own signature or style, informed from their life’s experiences whether they came from Martial arts, or performance, science… each informed them how to offer the benefits of this body of somatic learning from within.
Remember, we all started as beginners so why not start today. If you’ve experienced Feldenkrais, why not return and continue with something you might have put on hold or forgotten in the hectic lives we all live.
“The expert at anything was once a beginner.” Helen Hayes
I hope you are curious and interested in exploring with me this week as well as any week whether with ATM or private sessions that are created with the intention of offering comparisons between our developed patterns and what is also possible that offers greater efficiency and what Dr. Feldenkrais referred to as organic, congruent behavior.
“Better than 90 percent of the energy output of the brain is used in relating the physical body in its gravitational field.” — Dr. Roger Sperry, winner of the 1981 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine.
Reach out if you are not currently receiving my weekly links for ATM or would enjoy a private session whether virtual or live in person hands on, Functional Integration (FI) ® lessons. It’s always a pleasure to enable another to awaken to their own learning from within.
I hope I have earned the privilege of your time and attention and look forward to meeting you soon.
Warmest,
Peggi
