Getting Your Balance
Getting Your Balance
Balance happens on so many different levels. Pause for a moment. What first comes to mind? Is it physical balance or the fear of losing balance? Is it mental and emotional feelings and thoughts, being grounded, or feeling fog brain? Each informs other systems how to balance to help you find your equilibrium. This dance of life reflects our ability to balance stability and instability in our world. The only security is to find an ability to shift, adapt, and dance between these two extremes.
“Stability is nice. It also means difficulty to initiate movements as well as difficulty to be moved. Stability increases the feeling of safety. Instability means risk, but easy mobility. Both are biologically important. Being addicted to one of them makes one unsafe for lack of choice.” – Dr Moshe Feldenkrais
Have your own experience and stand for a moment. It’s fine to stand near something for support. Can you shift your weight onto one leg? Which leg did you choose, and what happened to the rest of you? Did you get taller or shorter? Did you hold your breath or even notice what you did with your breathing? Could you shift your weight to the other leg? Do you know what changed or what’s similar? Can you sense how you balance a bit easier to one leg compared to the other?
Now, if you took one step forward and stayed there with one leg forward and the other a bit behind, then shift your weight to the front leg, then go to the back leg, which leg did you step forward with, and what do you notice, where are your eyes? If your eyes are looking down, so is your head in front of your spine.
Compare and bring your chest a bit forward, which allows your head and eyes to come more to your horizon, and notice what’s different. I assure you there is a considerable difference to learning how to discern subtle differences. Becoming aware of these subtleties enables you to learn better how to renew your balance as you can’t keep it, rather find it, lose it and find it again.
“Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.” – Helen Keller
It is possible to explore in a safe enough environment to aid anybody’s ability to further develop and improve any function of the body that became habitually fixed. This process also creates a more harmonious growth of all aspects of being. Attending Awareness Through Movement (ATM)® lessons enable this process with a skilled practitioner to support you when either too much or too little stability create too much muscular effort to enable any system to function with the most efficient ability for where they are at that moment. It’s creates a subtle and significant improvement to build upon, no matter what your age or concerns. I welcome and invite you to join my intimate ATM classes for more support and mentoring if you like, to aid you in your experience of finding balance and support with ATM. Reach out if you are not currently receiving my weekly class links for Zoom sessions, 4 classes a week. And if interested, I invite you to experience a private session both in person or virtually known as Functional Integration (FI)® or Guided Learning.
I’m always curious and eager to share my passion and experiences of how these masterfully skilled developmental lessons have helped so many.
I hope I’ve earned the privilege of your time and attention, and look forward to connecting with you when the timing is right.
