Finding Connections
Finding Connections
This theme must be fluid, continuing gentle explorations to turn inwards and listen without judgment. Through this gentle process, you can begin to recognize how you are doing your daily activities and then compare them with alternate patterns. In an Awareness Through Movement (ATM)® lesson, these beautifully sculpted developmental processes help through comparisons to clarify other more congruent patterns for a more optimal way of sensing and feeling freer and more effortless.
This influences you not only physically, it also supports every aspect of your life exponentially. That’s why so many people, whether after an ATM lesson or private sessions, whether Functional Integration (FI)® or a virtually guided learning session, remark how it feels like magic! It’s not magic, while it does feel magical.
Create more options instead of comparing a known pattern. How we act and move is already wired into our nervous system; it’s a habit that too often goes unconscious. By noticing and comparing different ways of moving, you begin to bring into your brain other possibilities that open more ways that will improve movement.
Can you recognize through sensations that it is counterproductive to move into pain? This indicates to any nervous system to stop doing what you are doing. It might be more in how you are doing compared to what you are doing. It’s these little steps to compare over time to pause and notice that make all the difference for learning to awaken. Finding new connections and improving for more options to develop into more efficient patterns. Remember, if it’s easy, it’s efficient!
“In the course of the lessons the reader will find that the exercises suggested are in themselves simple, involving only easy movements. But they are intended to be carried out in such a way that those who do them will discover changes in themselves even after the first lesson.” – Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais
For a moment, rest, maybe come into a position for you to really relax, support yourself where you feel you need something so you can let go of holding and from this place, whether standing, sitting or lying down comfortably, can you think of the center of you? Your top and bottom meet at this juncture. From the middle, your center of gravity, you can activate to move your limbs. Notice that everything is connected, or is this sensation not clear? A skilled Feldenkrais practitioner can help you find this connection and allow you to experience something easier where all of you is passively interactive in any movement unless you intentionally create a constraint.
“A basic condition for Harmonious coordination is complete freedom from either self-compulsion or compulsion from others.” Dr Moshe Feldenkrais
This week I return to my 4 afternoon ATM classes, so I hope you will join me to experience for yourself the difference that makes a difference in how you think, feel and move.
