Do you have a Cranky Back?

Do you have a Cranky Back?

One of my students called me with the complaint of a “cranky back.” Of course, they had tried their known ways to address this; massage, stretching and exercising, but without gaining any benefit. In fact, working harder to fix the problem, they only intensified their discomfort. When people are in pain – I think most want an immediate fix instead of understanding the strategies we explore as Feldenkrais® practitioners. Too often you activate known habitual patterns.

Fortunately, I had a cancellation and could see them immediately. It’s always good to take an action sooner than later. It helps to create the change and improvement instead of staying in that conundrum doing the same thing again and again to fix the problem. If it’s not improving then it’s best to select another tact.

I often share that pushing into resistance only creates more resistance. My question to you is; how can you improve your functionality if you haven’t found new skills to make positive changes? How to be present, to notice and from there find new pathways into improvement. Learning is a process through comparison that takes time and it dawns upon you as it begins to sink in and integrate into your nervous system. Awaken now to what is really possible.

In this wonderful dynamic learning system know as The Feldenkrais Method we become more skilled at measuring our movements. This skill of observing is crucial, and of course even when you are naturally more intuitive to this way of recognizing patterns, it is still a learned way of being you continue to honor and improve.

The process is to take over the hard work your body is doing and replace it with a more fluid, more masterful way to take charge of your movements. Whether in a live hands on session known as Functional Integration (FI)® as well as the virtual sessions whether a private mentoring or Awareness Through Movement (ATM)® classes, we observe, offer options and possibilities to enable greater ease instead of the learned hard wired conditioned patterns of forcing and pushing into resistance.

I offer a way in to find improvement and what is more efficient compared to much of our learned behavior. It is a non-judgmental approach to help guide, support and facilitate each person’s improvement that creates a wake up call to find your potential and enables a change for the better in how you think, feel and move. Begin as we did as infants, putting the pieces of the puzzle together to sense and feel what real ease, efficiency actually feels like. It’s all in the comparisons to discern for ourselves where something not only became possible but actually easier. What does smooth, easy and pleasurable feel like?

“My purpose is to allow people to move closer to actually being creatures of free choice, to genuinely reflect individual creativity and emotion, freeing the body of habitual tensions and wired-patterns of behavior so that it may respond without inhibition to do what the person wants.” Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais
