Brains that Fire Together, Wire Together

Researchers from UC Santa Cruz now recognize that within the first few months of fetal development, long before the human brain is capable of receiving and processing external sensory information, cells spontaneously begin emitting electrical signals.  These signals are characteristic of patterns that underlie the translation of our senses: smell, hearing, sight, taste, and touch. Scientists have discovered that neurons fire in patterns that aren’t random. Apparently, our brains have a “default mode”, a basic underlying structure for firing neurons that becomes more specific after birth, with external information as the brain processes unique signals from our sensory organs.  These are known as teleceptors and are located in our skull.  Our eyes, ears, nose, mouth and also touch.  This “default mode” outlines the possible range of sensory responses that the body and brain can produce once external information begins to awaken the capacity to act and to create self-directed movement and thought.

The Feldenkrais Method® of somatic learning holds that brains that wire together, fire together.  This shares the concept of learning through “morphic resonance” from Rupert Sheldrake.  One of the examples that is shared is how women, whether at schools, camps, or even in prisons, living together, start to ovulate and experience their menses that begin to coordinate at the same time.

When we come together and explore almost anything, a resonance awakens new sensations, often beyond our habits.  Think about singing together; it awakens a listening that blends with the other voices.  When dancing, how do we attune to the rhythm and timing of our joint coordination to create a flow of ease and comfort, compared to being out of sync?  This also awakens when exploring the Feldenkrais approaches, both Awareness Through Movement (ATM)® lessons, and the hands-on, Functional Integration (FI)® sessions.  We create trust and resonance so that nervous systems attune and coordinate, both in Awareness Through Movement (ATM)® lessons and in hands-on work, for improved harmony and resilience in how you think, feel, and move.

Do you enjoy the process of learning new things, whether it’s your career, work, hobby, or improving how you move with more ease and comfort?  When this process is enjoyable, it will integrate or sink into your nervous system, as long as you continue to explore consistently to polish your new or renewed skills. Become free from the thinking that limits you from realizing your extraordinary ability to learn.

“I believe that the unity of mind and body is an objective reality.  They are not just parts somehow related to each other, but an inseparable whole while functioning.”Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais

Focus on what you can control and what is not under your control; put it out of your mind.

I hope I’ve earned the privilege of your time and attention this week, and I wish you all improved health and happiness, as this is something we all can improve with renewed focus.

Warmest,

Peggi
