Hands Involve All Of You
Hands Involve All Of You
Your hands and eyes are the primary way of connecting with the outside world. Take the time to observe and notice how any infant uses more of themselves, especially as they almost immediately use their hands and eyes to engage in movement. Hands help clarify and explore to feel what’s around you. Both of these sensory organs have a large amount of real estate in your brain. An image known as the Humonculus, a type of imaginary hairband, represents our brain mapping with our bodily parts. Hands and eyes comprise significant space in your brain map. Hands are connected to our involuntary nervous system and reflect our emotional state. They also awaken learning as they richly enervate the brain that creates and activates the firing of neuronal connections. Have you ever noticed how we close and squeeze our hands to respond to our emotional state? We are often habituated to this squeezing of our hands. By becoming aware of this pattern, you can begin to open softly what you are holding onto, both physically and emotionally. It’s all in our ability to move beyond our known and your curiosity to investigate more.
Science has proven that movements create neurological connections for enhanced learning, giving direct access to the brain. The comparison of folding and unfolding of the hand spreads. This creates greater ease and comfort throughout all of you. When you explore any movement with slow, easy, simple, comfortable small explorations, allow for many pauses in between so as not to create rote and tuning out patterning. Notice how all of this facilitates wiring in more efficient and optimal habits into your nervous system.
Our hands are part of our whole being, so when you can appreciate how hands are wired through your spine, down into the pelvis, you can begin to sense and feel to follow that thread of connection. You’ll come to realize that you use less effort and less strain in the use of your hands. Once you begin to feel it, continue to look for that connection, like a thread, to feel all of you when reaching, grabbing, holding and pulling or pushing.
“The muscle is subservient to the brain. Whatever the brain tells the muscle to do, the muscle is going to do.” – Scot Crawford, director/documentary writer.
This week I will be teaching lessons that help to awaken these connections so you can continue to explore on your own to find more ease, comfort and potency in your life no matter what you might be coping with. Stresses whether good or negative are there to learn from and move through. Each one of us needs to go through it to prevail and move forward with more comfort in learning to make life easier and improved.
“The aim is a body that is organized to move with minimum effort & maximum efficiency, not through muscular strength, but through increased consciousness of how it works.” – Dr.Moshe Feldenkrais
Reach out to learn more: receive Awareness Through Movement (ATM)® zoom links for weekly afternoon classes, receive audio files to download, scheduling private sessions whether live in person or virtual. If you would like to bring a friend to enjoy a live ATM class in my studio, we can schedule this for your convenience, so think of what’s possible, dream it and let’s make it happen.
